M4.9 earthquake hits east Japan

An earthquake registering an estimated magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale jolted several prefectures in east Japan's Kanto region Saturday evening, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The quake was felt in Tokyo and its neighboring area, accordingto the agency. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the 20:07 p.m. (1107 GMT) quake, which measured 3 to 4on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7.

Its focus was about 40 kilometers underground in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo, the agency said.
