font size

As the clean-up operation is going on in southern Afghanistan, another Taliban leader was apprehendedlast week in Taliban's former stronghold of Kandahar, a US military spokesman said Monday.

"In my understanding a Taliban leader Mullah Majid was capturedby Afghan National Army (ANA) in north of Kandahar on July 7," spokesman Jon Siepmann told a news briefing here.

He said the arrested commander has been brought in for interrogation to the Ministry of Defense here in Kabul. But he declined to give more details.

"That was not a coalition capture and he is in ANA custody," the spokesman added.

The mountainous southern region, known as the heartland of Taliban, has been the scene of increasing militancy for the last six months where over 250 civilians, rebels, and government and USsoldiers as well as aid workers have been killed.

Over 300 suspected Taliban remnants have been kept in 23 US military-run detention centers in Afghanistan.
