Appeal to be made against sentences on two Russians in Qatar
font size

The appeal demanding the revision of the decision of the Qatari court that found two Russian citizens guilty of assassinating Chechen separatist Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev is being drafted in Doha.

Mohsen Al-Souidi, the Russian citizens' Qatari lawyer, told Tass by phone from Doha on Monday that the appeal would be filed in the next two days. He said the defence demands that both Russians be found not guilty and acquitted. "We respect the court's decision but we do not accept it", the lawyer said.

The deadline for filling the appeal runs out on Thursday. The Qatari prosecutors office can also make an appeal against the court decision. They are not satisfied with the decision that sentenced the Russians to life imprisonment.

Al-Souidi defends the two Russian citizens as under the country's legislation only Qataris can act as defence in Qatari courts. At the same time, other lawyers, also Russian, were present in the courtroom.
