India's population to overtake China's within 30 years
font size

India's population will overtake China's to become the world's largest in 30 years.

The registrar-general, JK Banthia, estimates that by 2035 India's population will reach 1.46 billion taking it ahead of China.

The final record from a March 2001 census of India established a head count of 1.03 billion souls.

In the decade leading to 2001, India's population increased by more than 180 million people.

China's population growth has been controlled through the "one child policy", which authorities estimate has resulted in 300 million fewer births over the past 10 years.
