MTV, condom, film, poster -- anything that is helpful to the prevention of HIV/AIDS has been discussed in the ongoing International AIDS Conference here.
In the youth-question-leaders session Tuesday, the issue of how to use MTV to educate youth on sex and condom use was explored.
Georgia Franklin from the United States said that media has an amusing ability to put information into youth's mind, and MTV is an easier way to reach young people than former education.
However, compared with the work in the United States and Europe,it is much difficult to put information about sex and condoms on MTV in Asian and African countries where sex is still a taboo in public talks.
Georgia Franklin said her MTV programs are tailed to different values in different countries and regions. They give global as well as local message.
To make condoms look attractive to youth in MTV was suggested in the session as a survey found that 90 percent young people know they should use condoms, but few than one-third actually use them.
To increase the condom use, the price must be affordable to school girls and boys and easy to buy, not making them feel embarrassing in a supermarket. The private sector was also urged to take social responsibility, not only profits in the session.
