Khatami criticizes European nations for lack of commitment
font size

Iranian President Mohammad Khatami Wednesday criticized European countries for lack of commitment, the official IRNA news agency reported.

"There was an agreement and we believe they could do this but they refused. We have complained to Europe in this regard," Khatami was quoted as saying to reporters after a cabinet meeting.

He pointed to the Brussels Agreement signed between Iran and the three European countries of France, Germany and Britain on Feb. 23.

According to the agreement, Iran decided to suspend assembly of centrifuge parts while the three countries promised to help remove Iran's dossier from the top of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) agenda.

But instead the three co-sponsored a resolution at the UN nuclear watchdog that criticised Iran's failure to fully comply with an IAEA probe into whether Iran is seeking merely atomic energy or nuclear weapons.

Khatami told the reporters that "because they did not do this, we are not bound by the accord."

He also ruled out the possibility of negotiations with the United States on nuclear issues, saying "talks should bear fruits but the US attitudes and strategies were not correct and were motivated by special aims. Negotiations will not be fruitful under the current condition."

"If we feel a fundamental change is being occurred in US policies in regards to Iran, there will be a new situation but we have not felt so," he added.

Khatami also slammed the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA) with a circumbendibus tone.

"Unfortunately, several international organizations are influenced by the pressure imposed by super powers more than being influenced by wisdom," he said.

On June 18, the IAEA adopted a resolution submitted by the three European countries, which accused Tehran of being less than satisfactory or transparent during the cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog.

The resolution dissatisfied Iran profoundly, who therefore accused the European side of lip service, announcing resumption of centrifuges building and threatening restart of uranium enrichment.
