A Chinese woman was killed and a Chinese man was injured in an armed robbery at their house in Witbank, about 150 km east of Pretoria on Friday morning.
Zhou Jianzhong, president of the Southern African Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Liaison Association, told Xinhua that the armed robbery occurred around 7 a.m. (0500 GMT) when two blackgunmen intruded into the house.
The woman who was killed is named Zhang Yali and the injured man is named Wang Xiande.
The armed robbers shot dead the residents, who were both from Shanghai and at age of 57, after they searched the house and robbed the victims of money.
The injured has been sent to a local hospital while the two gunmen ran at large.
South Africa is labeled as the capital of crime in the world. With the negative public perception about crime and safety deepening, less South Africans feel safe in 2003 than they did in 1998.
In 1998, 60 percent South Africans said they felt very safe walking in the areas where they live during the day. This figure dropped to only 25 percent in 2003.
