80 Nepalese people die from floods, landslide

The death tool has reached 80 from the recent landslides and floods in various districts of Nepal, the Nepali Home Ministry said Monday.

Most of the people died in floods in eastern Terai Belt region in southern Nepal in the last two weeks due to the incessant rain,said Durga Raj Sharma, under-secretary of the Natural Calamity Department of the ministry.

With the improvement of weather, the incident of flood and landslides has subsided, Sharma noted, adding that relief has been distributed through the district committees of the most affected areas.

Meanwhile, the outbreak of diarrhea in remote villages of Rukumdistrict in western Nepal has claimed the lives of over 25 persons since the beginning of monsoon season in June this year, he said.

More than 100 persons have died of gastro-enteritis due to the lack of medicine in western Nepal during the last one month, he added.

During the monsoon season in June-September every year in the Himalayan kingdom, hundreds of people die and thousands of families are affected due to landslides and floods. More than 500 people died from such kind of disasters last year.
