Jordan force South Korea to goalless draw in Asian Cup
font size

South Korean were forced to a 0-0 draw with Jordan at group B game at the 2004 Asian cup at Shan Dong stadium Monday in Jinan.

Dominating the game from the kickoff, the South Koreans saw their first chance to make a goal only three minutes into the game when their spearhead Ahn Jung Hwan successfully beat Jordan's ferocious defense and made a fabulous shot on the right side out of the box, but only saw the ball flying over the bar.

"We were unlucky, we made many chances, but just could not convert it into goals." said South Korean coach Jo Bonfrefe at the news conference after the game.

Twenty-three minutes into the game, Ahn, the striker who scored the goal that eliminated Italy and sent South Korea historically into semi-finals of 2002 World Cup, stunned Jordan fans again by a long shot from almost the same spot, but the ball was denied by Jordan's goalkeeper Sabbahm Amer.

"They got an excellent goalkeeper who performed really well in the game, if without him, I think Korean would have already scored in the first half." added Bonfrefe, who regarded the Jordan goal keeper as one of the best goal keeper in Asia.

Dubbed as "Asian's Greece", Jordan defended the game well and almost shocked South Koreans at the end of the first half when their Spearhead Shelbaieh Mahmound made a long distance shot on the right side out of the box.

"I should thank our player for their hard work to prepare this game and we did a good job tonight, the only pity was that we did not win the game", said Jordan's coach Mahmoud Al Gohary, who guided his team entered into the Asian cup finals for the first time.

With a boisterous crowd of about 3000 fans cheering, the South Koreans looked more and more desperate to score a goal in the second half and their efforts were almost paid off in the 68th minute when their second half substitute Cha Du Ri made a sole shot in the penalty area, but the ball was denied again by SabbahmAmer.

"South Korea is a strong team, and their attacking was really fast, but we defended well. Although we did not make a goal, but I am satisfied with what we did tonight," said Mahmoud Al Gohary.

Jordan, who slowly found their pace at the end of the second half, also made several chances to score after South Korean defender Choi Jin Cheui was sent off after receiving his second yellow card from Referee Maidin Shamsui of Singapore, but none of them were converted to a goal.
