China will try to win more than 20 gold medals in the upcoming Athens Olympics, but would find it hard to collect 28 golds as they did four years ago in Sydney, vice chef-de-mission Li Furong of the Chinese Olympic delegation said Tuesday in Beijing.

"It will be normal to get anywhere over 20 but very difficult to reach 28," Li told reporters at a press conference after announcing the formation of the 633-strong Chinese contingent.

"We overperformed in Sydney," he said. "And we also took the advantage of our rivals' mistakes. We will try our best to win as many gold medals as possible. In my opinion, it's normal to win more than 20."

"We don't have a very specific target because in Olympics anything can happen," he added.

China will field 407 athletes for 203 events in 28 sports in Athens.
