Chinese Internet users receive an average of 13.8 emails per week, with 9.2 being junk mail, according to a survey on the development of the Internet in China released here Tuesday.

China's Internet surfers send an average of 4.3 emails while spending 12.3 hours a week online, said the twice-yearly survey by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC).

Each user has an average of 1.5 email addresses, including 1.3 free ones, said the survey.

The survey found that 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. remain the peak times for Internet surfing, with around 46 percent and 45.4 percent of users surf online during each of the two hours, the survey found.

Obtaining information and killing leisure time are the top two reasons for Chinese to go online with 42.3 percent and 34.5 percent of China's 87 million netizens using the Internet for searching information and for fun respectively, the survey showed.

Online study and making friends are the third and fourth most important reasons for Chinese Internet surfering, said the survey.
