font size

Hamas top leader held talks with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to find ways out of the current security situation in the Gaza Strip, Hamas sources said Thursday.

The Islamic Resistance movement (Hamas) political bureau head Khaled Mash'al held two telephone conversations with Arafat and Secretary General of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO)Mahmoud Abbas.

During the talks, Mash'al called on Arafat and Abbas to findways out of the current internal sedition and bridge gaps betweendifferent groups, the sources said.

Mash'al was quoted as saying that "Israelis should not be given a chance to use the current situation as a way out of their political impasse, particularly in light of Israel's deteriorating relations with international community in the wake of the International Court of Justice (ICJ)'s ruling against the separation wall."

The sources said Mash'al also warned of serious repercussions of using weapons against Palestinians and their cause.

Mash'al expressed Hamas' concerns about Palestinians' unity, the sources added.

Arafat is facing mounting calls for reforms in the security apparatuses amid unprecedented chaos in the Gaza Strip, fraught with kidnappings, attacks, demonstrations and Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei's resignation.
