Tibet marks 100th anniversary of anti-British struggle

Tibetans are commemorating the 100th anniversary of the anti-British struggle with a variety of activities that started earlier this month and will last into September, said organizers in the Tibet Autonomous Region in southwest China.

A number of monuments will be erected at the sites of major battlefields, said organizers.

Dramas, TV documentaries, TV dramas and performances on the struggle will be staged or broadcast, while a series of books will also be published. Contests on the knowledge of the struggle will be in many of the Tibetan schools.

In 1904, Tibetan people of various circles and all social stratas waged a struggle against the British invasion led by Francis Younghusband in Gyangze Prefecture of south China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

Gaisang Yexe, a researcher with the Tibet Regional Academy of Social Sciences, said that the British invasion, under the guise of seeking trade talks with Tibetan authorities, was aimed to grab Tibet's rich resources and alienate the region from China.

The researcher believed the commemorating activities are of great importance in encouraging the people of all nationalities in Tibet to carry on the fine tradition of patriotism, maintain the unity of the motherland and fight against the separatism.
