World heaviest hydro-generating unit put into operation

At 4:52 pm, July 26, the ninth generating unit put into use in the Three Gorges project��the No.11 generating unit in left bank stations was formally incorporated into grid and began generating.

The rotor of this generating unit boasts a maximum diameter of 18.74 meters, which stands 3.42 meters high and weighs 1,779 tons. The whole generating unit weighs around 4,900 tons counting the weight of its stator and water turbine, being the world heaviest of its kind ever put into use.
