font size

The Dutch government is allocating 100 million euros (about 122 million US dollars) for the reconstruction of the strife-torn Darfur region in west Sudan, Radio Netherlands reported on Tuesday.

Dutch Development Minister Agnes van Ardenne said Monday night that if Sudan needs more humanitarian funding, the Netherlands will be prepared to meet that demand, the radio said.

So far, the Netherlands has contributed 27 million euros (32.9 million dollars) in humanitarian aid to Darfur.

Van Ardenne also hailed the contributions to Darfur by other European countries, which have allocated humanitarian aids worth a total of 200 million euros (about 244 million dollars).

Foreign ministers from member states of the European Union (EU)met here on Monday and issued a warning that the EU will call on the United Nations to take further actions against Sudan if the situation in Darfur is not improved within three months.

The United Nations claims that up to 50,000 people have been killed and about 1 million others have been displaced in the ethnic and religious violence in Darfur.
