Indonesia's United Development Party (PPP) said Wednesday that it has not decided to support one of the two candidates of presidential election, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and the incumbent Megawati Soekarnoputri, adding that the official announcement from the party would be on July 31.
Alimarwan Hanan, deputy chairman of the PPP, told reporters in Jakarta that the party's top official plenary meeting on Wednesday has not made any conclusion.
"The meeting hasn't decided whether to support Yudhoyono or Megawati," Hanan said.
However, Hanan added that eight of the 28 PPP provincial representatives in the meeting recommended the party to support Megawati Soekarnoputri/Hasyim Muzadi, the other 16 representatives gave their mandates to the party's top leaders to decide and the rest suggested that the party members were given freedom to choose the candidates.
The PPP is an Islam-based party led by incumbent Vice President Hamzah Haz who also ran for presidency in the first round of the presidential election together with his running mate Agum Gumelar.
They got only 3.56 million votes or 3 percent of the total votes, standing on the fifth place of the five contenders.
Another senior official of the PPP, Emron Pangkapi, said that the support to Megawati would ensure the interests of the party members.
