The Uganda People's Defense Forces(UPDF) Wednesday engaged Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebel commander Joseph Kony in heavy fighting in southern Sudan, according to Radio Uganda.
Army spokesman Major Shaban Bantariza told the government radioon telephone that the UPDF crossed Sudan's military red line and engaged with Kony in heavy fighting on Wednesday and the fighting is still going on.
The Ugandan troops have captured Kony's four wives, several children, an aide plus his military uniform.
Bantariza said during the heavy fighting that took place at Dirinyang, the army killed 38 rebels and captured 25 others alive.
He said the army also captured Kony's walkie-talkie, four solarpanels, 35 guns, five bombs, 10 landmines and several other military equipment.
Earlier Wednesday, local media reported that President Yoweri Museveni has asked Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir to hand over Kony if the Sudanese army captures him.
The LRA rebels, based in southern Sudan, have killed tens of thousands of people and displaced over 1.6 million people in northern Uganda in their 18-year rebellion.
The Ugandan army has entered southern Sudan to pursue the LRA rebels with support of the Sudanese government.
