Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, one of al-Qaida's top operatives, has been captured in Pakistan, local media reported on Friday.

Ghailani, a Tanzanian national, was arrested by Pakistani police and intelligence agents in the city of Gujrat in eastern Punjab province on Sunday, according to the Dawn, the country's top English newspaper.

His identity was established during intense interrogations over the past few days, Faisal Saleh Hayat, the interior minister, told the private Geo television.

Ghailani has been on the FBI's most-wanted list for his alleged role in the 1998 bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, which led to the death of over 200 people.

Pakistan says it has arrested some 600 al-Qaeda suspects since the US-led coalition launched military operation against al-Qaeda and Taliban in Afghanistan in October 2001.

Top al-Qaeda henchmen including Abu Zubaida, Khalid Sheikh and Ramzi bin al Shib are among those arrested in Pakistan's major cities.
