Senior Chinese official meets scientific-literacy experts

Wang Zhaoguo, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met Friday with a group of overseas and domestic experts who attended the International Forum on Scientific Literacy.

Wang, also vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress, noted that the improvement of scientific literacy among the public is of great significance for the sharpening of a country's competitive edge and promotion of the coordinated development of the society and economy as well as the all-round development of human beings.

He said the Chinese government has been attaching importance to the promotion of scientific literacy among its citizens and scored great progress in scientific education at schools and the spread of science in the whole society in recent years.

Experts from China, the United States, France, Russia, Japan, the Republic of Korea and India gathered in Beijing on Thursday for the two-day event.

The forum was hosted by the China Association for Science and Technology and sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Beijing University, Qinghua University and Beijing Normal University.
