Donations flow into landslide-hit SW China

The Yunnan Provincial Red Cross said it has received donations worth 1.8 million yuan (about 216,900 US dollars) in relief for areas struck by floods, landslides and mudflows in this southwestern Chinese province.

Donated materials such as cotton quilts, rice, garments and medicines valued at 770,000 yuan (about 92,800 US dollars) have all been sent to the disaster-stricken areas in Dai-Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture of Dehong, Lisu Autonomous Prefecture of Nujiang and Baoshan City, said a spokesperson for the relief organization.

So far, no outbreaks of epidemic diseases have been detected in the disaster-hit areas, noted the spokesperson, who added that more rice, cotton quilts, garments, mosquito-repellent nets and medicines are still desperately needed in these areas.

Since July, many areas in the province, including Dehong and Nujiang

prefectures and Baoshan city, have experienced floods, mudflows and landslides.

Dehong, for instance, was ravaged by floods and mudslides twice on July 5 and July 20, leaving 35 people dead, 66 missing and 16 injured. Almost 20,000 houses were ruined, more than 20,000 hectares of crops flattened and destroyed, and a large number of infrastructure facilities seriously affected.

In Baoshan city, the landslide on July 22 has left one dead and three missing in Longyang district.
