Despite continued militancy and warlordism in parts of the post-Taliban Afghanistan over 8 millionor 91 percent of its citizens eligible to vote have registered, a UN spokesman said here Sunday.

"As of 29th of July voters' registration figure reached 8,659,772, of these 3,552,542 are women," David Singh said.

The figure is based on an estimated of 9.8 million eligible voters.

"Ninety-one percent of the eligible voters population to vote shows the determination of Afghans to participate in this process," Singh added.

The first-ever Afghan presidential election has been scheduled for Oct. 9 and the parliamentary polls on next April.

So far, 30 political parties out of 62 have registered to contest the landmark general elections in the war-battered country.

Remnants of the former Taliban regime and their allied extremist groups who intensified their anti-government activities have vowed to derail the upcoming election by any possible means.
