Mass graves discovered in Ivory Coast

A United Nations human rights team has discovered three mass graves with around a hundred bodies in the town of Korhogo in northern Ivory Coast.

The team says the victims were killed during fighting between rival rebel groups. It is not clear if there are civilians among the dead. CRIENGLISH.com reported Tuesday.

The clashes were prompted by a failed attempt on the life of rebel leader Guillaume Soro, whose fighters reportedly arrested and killed dozens of opponents.

Since a failed coup in September 2002, Ivory Coast has been split in a rebel-held northern part and a southern part controlled by the government. A peace accord concluded in May last year has failed to put an end to the violence.
