An expert from a national quality watchdog group who declined to disclose his name, has urged people to be careful when employing local translation companies.

There are more than 3,000 translation companies in China, and alarge number of consulting firms are also engaged in such business without any professional translators, said the expert, who is a member of the China Society for the Promotion of Quality.

As China's international exchanges increase, there are also growing demands for translators and interpreters of foreign languages. But some illegal "translation companies" have brought about losses to clients as well as to qualified translation firms.

The expert suggested that clients should first check if a translator has official license for translation or interpretation. It's better to hold a face-to-face talk before hiring the candidate, he said.
