The Jakarta Appeal Court has overturned convictions of three military officers and a police officer previously charged with massacre in East Timor in 1999, reports said Friday.

The four are Maj. Gen. Adam Damiri, former commander of the Udayana Military Command overseeing the ex-Indonesian territory, Brig. Gen. Noer Muis, former commander of the East Timor provincial military command, Sen. Commr.

Hulman Gultom, former police chief of Dili town in East Timor and Col. Sujarwo, former commander of the Dili military command.

The human rights tribunal previously sentenced them to between three and five years in jail.

The appeal court also halved jail sentence of militia leader Eurico Guterres to five years, reported Kompas online news service.

The court has acquitted a total of 12 military and police officers implicated with the East Timor massacre, which erupted before, during and after the 1999 ballot for independence sponsored by the United Nations.

Former East Timor governor Abilio Soares is the only convict who has been serving his three-year imprisonment since last month.
