"Bringing Inside Out and Outside In: Art for Community at Shanghai Street Artspace" launched in Yaumatei, Hong Kong on August 6.

"HKIEd teachers and students are determined to turn the 600-square-foot Artspace into an interactive ground for local artists, students, parents, schools and members of the public both within and without Yaumatei," head of the Shanghai Street Artspace Lai Ming Hoi said at the opening of the project.

The Department of Creative Arts of the Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) is commissioned by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council to manage the 400,000 HK dollars Shanghai Street Artspace project.

Art teachers, students and educators of HKIEd will interact with artists of various disciplines to explore, develop and learn from the artistic culture of Yaumatei in the forthcoming 12 months.

The Artspace is located in the heart of Yaumatei, an old district with rich cultural background and an epitome of Hong Kong's multi-facet culture. Yaumatei's street culture is more than antique with Hong Kong characteristics.

The nightlife of Temple Street, people gathering underneath old Banyan trees, Cantonese Opera singing on the street, fortune telling stalls, grassroots delicacies of local restaurants, architectural heritage of the police station, the theater, the fruit market are still parts of the daily life of residents in the district.

A total of 10 exhibitions, 6 public forums and a series of educational outreach projects are already in the pipeline throughout the coming year.
