Iran must abandon nuclear ambitions: Bush
font size

US President George W. Bush saidMonday that Iran must abandon its nuclear program.

"Iran must abandon her nuclear ambitions. That's part of the role of the United States, and to work with others to send that same message," Bush told a mass rally in Annandale, Virginia.

Bush said the United States was working closely with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is the agency principally responsible for the Iranian nuclear program.

He said the American government will continue to keep pressure on Iran and help others keep pressure on the Iranian government "so there is kind of a universal condemnation of illegal weapons activities".

Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi said on Monday that theinternational community has no reason to be suspicious about Iranian nuclear work.

"Iran has not violated any of its commitments to international treaties in its nuclear program," Kharrazi was quoted as saying bythe official Islamic Republic News Agency.

Iran insists it needs enriched uranium for power stations beingbuilt to meet booming domestic demand for electricity.
