By the end of July, 109 people were reported killed in 89 accidents involving production safety in the national capital Beijing, according to the latest statistics from its Municipal Production Safety Supervision Administration.
The number of accidents pertaining to production safety was one fewer than that for the same period last year, but the death toll rose by 12.4 percent, or 12 more than that of the corresponding period of last year.
A source with the administration said that nearly half of these accidents were related to operation of equipment in violation of production regulations and labor disciplines. The number of such accidents reported in the January-July period was 44, or 49.44 percent of the total. The death toll of these accidents was 57, or52.3 percent of the total death toll for the seven-month period.
The source noted that most safety accidents were reported in the construction sector, totaling 46 and killing 53 people.
The Standing Committee of the Beijing Municipal People's Congress has recently adopted regulations on production safety, scheduled to become valid on September 1 this year.
The new regulations are expected to significantly improve production safety in Beijing, an official in charge of the work said.
