7 women die in Zambian roadside horror

Seven women died while nine others sustained serious injuries after a Toyota careered off the road and plunged through a group of women on Sunday night near Kabwe, Central province of Zambia, local newspaper Times of Zambia reported Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Brenda Muntemba was quoted as saying the accident happened after the driver of the Toyota lost control and hit a group of women who were selling vegetables and other merchandise.

Muntemba said that five people died on the spot while two others died on arrival at a nearby hospital.

She said the driver surrendered himself to police on Monday morning after he had bolted shortly after the accident.

Muntemba said the injured were currently admitted at Kabwe General hospital and called on the public to assist identify both the deceased and the injured.
