Sudan appoves Darfur "action plan"

The Sudanese government has approved a "plan of action" to dispel fears over the humanitarian situation in its Darfur region.

Under the plan, the government will within a month establish security zones for Darfur residents, approach militias and instruct them to cease their activities and lay down their weapons, CRIENGLISH.com reported Tuesday.

The government also called for international community to support its efforts and provide humanitarian aid to the Darfur region.

Foreign Minister Mustafa Ismail said the Sudanese government could alleviate the situation in Darfur and reiterated that there was no genocide in the region. The European Union also said it has found no evidence of genocide in the region, though there was widespread violence.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia noted it rejects military intervention into the Darfur region or sanctions against Sudanese government, appealing the international community to give the Sudanese government enough time to fulfil its promise.
