Coach: Wind and heat is obstacle for Olympic shooters
font size

Chinese shooting coach Sun Shengwei said Tuesday in Athens that strong winds and sizzling heat may be the biggest obstacle to trap and skeet shooters at the upcoming Athens Olympic Games.

"The wind at the Markopoulo shooting center is rather strong," said Sun.

"The direction of an target is prone to changes with big winds, so it may affect the athletes' performance," he added.

The Markopoulo shooting center, which is about 44km from the city center of Athens, was built on a hillside. According to Sun, the wind speed could reach 61 kilometers per hour at peak.

Besides the winds, the summer heat is also expected to be a tough test for the shooters during the Aug. 13-29 Games.

"The shooting competitions all take place in the daytime. Shooters have to compete in the scorching sun for over two hours. It's really tough," said Sun.

In August, temperatures usually hover around 35 degrees centigrade in the Greek capital.
