World champion Edwards forced out of Olympics
font size

World 100m champion Torri Edwards will have to miss the Athens Olympic Games after she was banned for two years on Wednesday having failed dope test, the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) said.

Edward, 27, tested positive for nikethamide, a prohibited stimulant, at an athletics meeting in Fort-de-France, Martinique on April 24.

A USADA statement confirmed the disqualification of Edwards.

"Among the results which where nullified are second place in the 100 meters and third place in the 200 meters at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

"Edwards is ineligible for the 2004 U.S. Olympic team."

She has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) whose decision in the case will be final.

Her suspension might pave way for reigning 100m champion Marion Jones to defend her title in Athens, but Gail Devers, who finished ahead of Jones in the US trials, has revealed that she will compete in the event.

The decision of 37-year-old veteran and two-time Olympic 100m champion Devers to contest both the sprint and the 100m hurdles is a blow to Jones, who has only qualified for the long jump and possibly the relays.
