DPRK, ROK march in under unification flag
font size

Athletes from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and South Korea marched under the same unification flag in a delegations' parade at the Olympic opening ceremony Austust 13 night.

Athletes from the two countries marched together just as they did four years ago in Sydney, with South Korean volleyballer Ku

Ming Jung and DPRK official Kim Song Ho holding the flag.

Top sports officials from the two countries - Lee Yun Taek, president of the (South) Korea Olympic Committee (KOC), and Mun

Jae Duk, president of DPRK Olympic Committee (DPRKOC), marched together with hand in hand, right behind the two flag-bearers.

Earlier, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge told reporters that he held a meeting Friday morning

with both the DPRK and South Korean sides and discussed the possibility of having a unified team in future Olympics.

"It is far more important than a unified parade," said Rogge.

But he added that it takes time and need further discussions before a unified team could be formed.

"It relates to the issue of qualification (for the Olympics), not just forming a team," Rogge said.

The president added that the IOC will play an "assisting role" while the two national Olympic Committees play the "leading roles"

in organizing a unified team.

South Korea is relaying satellite broadcasts of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Athens Olympics and other highlights

from the games to DPRK for free.

"It is the second time South Korea will provide broadcasting to DPRK since the Summer Universiad," said Yuhn Woong-hyun, an

official at the Korea Broadcasting Commission (KBC), referring to the World University Games held in the South Korean city of Taegu

last year.
