159 candidates to compete in HK Legislative Council election

The names of 159 validly nominated candidates for the 2004 Legislative Council election, together with their candidate number or list number were gazetted Friday.

Returning Officers have completed the verification of all 109 nominations received for the September Legislative Council election. All but three nominations have been ruled as valid.

A total of 35 lists of 88 candidates are running for 30 seats in five geographical constituencies. Another 60 candidates are competing for 19 seats in 17 functional constituencies.

Eleven candidates have been elected unopposed in 11 functional constituencies to the Legislative Council.

The Legislative Council election will be held on Sept. 12.
