Russia denies conducting nuclear tests

The Russian Foreign Ministry on Friday denied the country had conducted any nuclear tests in post-Soviet times.

"Since gaining sovereignty, Russia has not conducted a single nuclear test," the ministry said in a statement, according to the Interfax news agency.

The ministry issued the statement in reaction to allegations made by the mayor of the Japanese city of Hiroshima that Russia had conducted such tests.

Russia, which ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty in 2000, "is strictly observing this commitment and is determined to do so in the future, if other countries follow suit," the statement said.
