American swimmer Michael Phelps won the men's 400m individual medley in a new world record of 4:08.26 at the Athens Olympic Games Saturday.

The old world record was 4:08.41 set by Phelps on July 7 in the U.S. Olympic trials.

The teenage phenom is looking forward to breaking countryman Mark Spitz's seven-gold-in-one-games.

Erik Vendt of the United States took the silver in 4:11.81 and Hungarian Laszlo Cseh got the bronze in 4:12.15.
