The Venezuelan authorities said on Sunday that two isolated incidents of violence left two people dead and 12 others injured during the Sunday revocation referendum on the mandate of President Hugo Chavez.

The most severe incident took place at a voting center located in a rural area near the capital, where unknown individuals opened fire from a moving motorcycle onto the line of voters, killing one woman and injuring 12 people.

The fatality was a 28-year-old woman, Rafael Briceno, chief of the local fire department, told reporters. The 12 injured were taken to a hospital east of Caracas, near the Vuelta del Aguila sector, in Miranda state, where the incident took place at around 04:30 p.m. local time, (2030 GMT).

In the other incident, a young woman, 18, died when a soldier guarding a voting center west of this capital accidentally fired his arm, Attorney General Isaias Rodriguez told the press.
