China's economic growth brings prospects for Zambia: minister

Zambian Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Dipak Patel said China's economic growth holds bright prospects for the copper-rich Zambia.

Speaking in a recent interview, Patel said China's economic expansion would see an increased demand for Zambian copper.

He observed that if China upped her demand for copper, this would strengthen the kwacha, the local currency.

China has in the recent past scaled up consumption of Zambian copper, leading to a marked strengthening and stabilizing of the Zambian currency.

Despite the slump in the value of copper on the international market, copper has remained Zambia's economic engine for development.
