American teenager Michael Phelps, whose dream of winning a record-equalling seven gold medals was shattered on August 16, finally captured his second gold from the men's 200 meters butterfly at the 28th Olympic Games here on Tuesday.
Phelps, 19, who won the Games' first swimming gold from the 400m individual medley on Saturday, clocked one minute 54.04 seconds for the gold, bettering the Olympic Games record of 1:55.
35 set by compatriot Thomas Malchow four years ago.
Phelps finished third in Monday's 200m freestyle, behind Australia's Ian Thorpe and Dutchman Pieter van den Hoogenband.
Japan's Takashi Yamamoto finished second in 1:54.56 and Britain 's Stephen Parry was third in 1:55.52.
Parry's bronze was Britain's first medal in this Olympic Games and also the first Olympic swimming medal for eight years.
"It's amazing, we really needed a medal in the British camp," said Parry, adding, "I'm not quite satisfied even if I lost to the best in the world."
