American teenager Michael Phelps won his second and third gold medals while Ukraine's Yana Klochkova captured her second title from the women's 200m individual medley at the 28th Olympic Games in Athens on August 17.

Phelps, whose dream of winning a record-equalling seven gold medals was shattered on Monday, finally got his second gold from the men's 200 meters butterfly.

He went on to win a third with the United States in the 4X200m freestyle relay.

The day's other gold medal went to Romania's Camelia Potec from the women's 200 meters freestyle.

The United States, who consisted of Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Peter Vanderkaay and Klete Keller, clocked seven minutes 7.33 seconds for the gold.

The defending champions Australia, including Grant Hackett, Michael Klim, Nicholas Sprenger and Ian Thorpe, finished second in 7:07.46 while Italy won the bronze in 7:11.83.

Phelps, who swam the first leg, put the Americans in front after 200 meters, with Hackett in second. The Aussies dropped to third behind the Americans and Italians on Klim's leg, but Sprenger moved them back to second before Thorpe took over.

Ryan Lochte and Peter Vanderkaay maintained the US lead, allowing Keller to dive in ahead of Thorpe on the anchor leg.

Even though Thorpe's 200m split of 1:44.18 was faster than Keller's 1:45.53, the American was able to hold him off.

Phelps won the night's first gold in a Thorpe-absent 200m butterfly event with one minute 54.04 seconds, bettering the

Olympic Games record of 1:55.35 set by compatriot Thomas Malchow four years ago.

"That's great," Phelps said. "I was really hurting in the third lap. I knew the other guys were coming in strong, so I just hoped

I could hit the wall first."

Japan's Takashi Yamamoto finished second in 1:54.56 and Britain's Stephen Parry was third in 1:55.52.

"This is the Olympics. I have been dreaming of it. I'm so glad, "said Yamamoto. "I was aiming at gold. I have nothing to regret.

This is the result I got after giving my best. So I think this is the best result with my skills right now."

Parry's bronze was Britain's first medal in this Olympic Games and also the first Olympic swimming medal for eight years.

"It's amazing, we really needed a medal in the British camp," said Parry, adding, "I'm not quite satisfied even if I lost to the best in the world."

Klochkova, winner of the women's 400 meters individual medley on Friday, clocked two minutes 11.14 seconds, with Amanda Beard of the United States coming second in 2:11.70 and Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry third in 2:12.72.

"I am surprised," she said. "I didn't think I could win this race. I am delighted."

Klochkova, 22, has retained both titles of the 200m and 400m individual medley that she won in the Sydney Olympics four years ago.

"Today it was more difficult than yesterday," she said. "This gold is also for my parents, my brother and my sister. Everybody."

She has dominated the two events since 2000, winning all the major world competitions including the world championships, European championships, Olympic Games and Universiade.

She also won a silver from the 800m freestyle in the Sydney Olympic Games.

Beard said, "I have never swum this event internationally before, so to swim a silver medal in the Olympics where it is the best, is great."

She said she will compete in the 200m breaststroke.

Coventry said she felt very proud to win a medal for her African country.

"I am very proud to represent Zimbabwe," she said. "It's nice to hear all the support. It's a great country. I am so proud."

Potec, 22, clocked one minute 58.03 seconds, beating German star swimmer Franziska van Almsick to the fifth place.

Potec, who finished seventh in the Sydney Olympic Games, has made great improvements in the past few years. She won the bronze in the 2001 world championships, second in the 2002 European championships and first in this year's European championships.

This was her second event in the Games, following her fourth place finish in the 400m freestyle.

"I am very happy this is my first medal," Potec said. "I wanted a medal in this Olympics and I managed to get a gold."

She added, "I swam my best, it was not my best time but it was good enough for a gold medal. In the 400m I swam my best time but didn't get a medal."

Italy's Federica Pellegrini took the silver in 1:58.22 and France's Solenne Figues was third in 1:58.45.

Pellegrini said, "At first I wasn't sure I'd made it, then I looked up at the scoreboard and it's just fantastic.

"I worked hard for this, I was hoping for it, and my happiness is immense."

Figues, who won the silver in this European championships, said,"A bronze medal is great. I dedicate this medal to those who supported me and my little husband."

The day's competition also produced a surprise from the men's 100m freestyle semifinals, with former Olympic champion Alexander Popov failing to reach the finals.

Popov, 31, who dominated the event for most of the 1990s, clocked 49.23 seconds to take the ninth place.

Thorpe nearly missed the finals as he was eighth in 49.21.

Defending champion Pieter van den Hoogenband of the Netherlands eased into the finals in 48.55. He was second behind South African Roland Mark Schoeman, who was timed 48.39.

"The field for the final looks really exciting," Hoogenband said. "Popov missed the final and that's a big surprise for me. I think I'll be ready for action."

"I am really well, the Olympic Gods are looking over me," said Schoeman.

Popov won the gold of the event in the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games but came second in Sydney four years ago behind Hoogenband.

He regained the title at last year's world championships in Barcelona.
