UN Urges Burundi exercise restraint
font size

A UN spokesman is calling on the Burundian government to exercise restraint, saying violence won't help reduce tensions there.

In another development, United Nations agencies on Tuesday announced they would enhance operations in the border area between Burundi and Congo, in case of retaliation from the Burundian side, reported China Radio International.

The UN will reinforce helicopter patrols along the border, increase security in refugee camps and accelerate the transfer of survivors to safer sites far from the frontier area.

Early on the day, Burundi and Rwanda threatened to send soldiers into neighboring Congo to hunt down Hutu extremists responsible for slaughtering more than 150 Congolese Tutsi refugees at a U.N. camp in Burundi.
