Law enforcement agencies search religious venues in Pakistan
font size

Pakistani law enforcement agencies raided a mosque and its seminary here on Tuesday, searching for two religious leaders having alleged links with al-Qaida.

The Dawn newspaper Wednesday reported that Maulana Abdul Aziz and his brother, Maulana Ghazi Abdul Rashid, were believed to have escaped from the Lal Mosque before the hunting for them.

The duo has relations with the al-Qaida network and has conducted anti-government activities, police sources were quoted as saying.

Religious students in the seminary blocked the traffic outside the mosque after the raid, chanting slogans against the government.

In a nation with over 90 percent of the population being Muslims, actions on religious venues always trigger huge resentment.
