Paris to celebrate liberation from Nazi occupation

French Interior Minister Dominique de Villepin will inaugurate Thursday the 60th anniversary of Parisliberation from Nazi occupation at the Prefecture Police (PP), announced the PP on Wednesday.

The ceremony will be held in the Court of Aug. 19 where the Parisian resistance began in 1944.

The interior minister will make a speech to mark the events in 1944.

After more than four years of Nazi occupation, Paris was liberated by the French 2nd Armored Division and the US 4th Infantry Division on the night of Aug. 24-25 1944.

The next day, General Charles de Gaulle, head of France's provisional government in London, led a joyous march down the Champs Elysee Avenue.

On Aug. 25, President Jacques Chirac will preside over the official celebrations on the day of the liberation.
