At least three main US military bases in Germany will keep unchanged when tens of thousands of troops leave the country, a senior US official said on Thursday.
The Spangdahlem Air Force Base, Ramstein Air Force Base and the European Command Base (EUCOM) were cited by Charles F. Wald, Deputy Commander of US European Command, at a press conference in Stuttgart.
"There is no reason to make changes there," Wald said, without commenting on the fate of other US installations, all located in the south and west of Germany.
Ramstein is the US Air Force's headquarters and main transport hub in Europe while Spangdahlem hosts F-16 fighter units.
EUCOM in Stuttgart ranks as the US forces' most senior strategic site overseas.
On Monday, US President George W. Bush announced that up to 70,000 US troops will return home over the next decade.
The 1st Armored Division in Wiesbaden and the 1st Infantry Division in Wuerzburg were to be pulled out of Germany, local media reported.
