Roundup: China harvests first two badminton golds

Depending on the fantastic performance exerted by Zhang Ni and Zhang Jun/Gao Ling, the powerful Chinese national badminton team reaped a good harvest by winning the first two golds on August 19.

Zhang Ning, No.2 seed from China, won the first gold by beating Mia Audina of the Netherlands 8-11, 11-6, 11-7 in the women's singles' final match of the Olympic badminton tournament.

Mia, the former Indonesian genius who crushed top seed Gong Ruina in the semi-final with a humiliating 11-4, 11-2 win, regained her best form in the first set, pressing Zhang Ning to make consecutive errors in the end of the the first set, and won the first set 11-8.

World champion Zhang Ning, however, didn't feel distressed after losing the first set, and recollected all her efforts to fight back, finishing the second set 11-6 with a serve point.

In the third set, Mia, annoyed by two judgements of linemen and a yellow card from the umpire, started to make more and more errors, handing over the Olympic gold to Zhang 7-11.

"I feel very happy to win the gold at the age of 29," said Zhang, adding that she would like to attribute her success to her coaches.

Mia, No.4 seed in the tournament who was satisfied with the silver medal in Atlanta, admitted that she was a little disappointed right after the match.

"However, I feel better and better, as to earn a medal in the Olympics is quite difficult, and I'm satisfied with it," added Mia.

In mixed doubles' final, defending champions Zhang Jun/Gao Ling didn't let the chance slip away from their fingers after top seeds fell in quarter-finals, by defeating Robertson/Emms from the Great Britain 15-1, 12-15, 15-12.

Zhang/Gao, No.2 seed in the Olympic tournament, found no difficulties to crush the 4th seeds 15-1 in the first set.

The favorites for the mixed doubles' gold after invincible Kim Dong Moon/Ra Kyung Min of South Korea were kicked out in quarter-finals, however, met stern resistance from the British pair in Goudi Olympic Hall filled with shout and applause of European spectators, and surrendered the second set 12-15.

In the third set, Zhang/Gao survived great pressure imposed by their opponents and the crowd, catching the winning chance 15-12 at last and the second gold for Chinese national badminton team.

In the bronze medal match of women's singles, top seed Gong Ruina was upsetted by her compatriot Zhou Mi, nicknamed "sweety ",who won the comforting bronze medal 11-2, 8-11, 11-6.

While Jens Eriksen/Mette Schjoldager of Denmark won the civil war against their compatriots Jonas Rasmussen/Rikke Olsen 15-5, 15-5, clinching the bronze medal of mixed doubles.

In today's semi-finals of men's doubles, Kim Dong Moon/Ha Tae Kwon and Lee Dong Soo/Yoo Yong Sung secured the gold medal for South Korea by beating their respective opponents.

Kim/Ha trounced Eng Hian/Flandy Limpele of Indonesia 15-8, 15-2,while their compatriots Lee/Yoo, soon recovering from losing the first set 9-15, defeated Danish pair Jens Eriksen/Martin Lundgaard in the remaining two sets 15-5, 15-3.
