font size

Anna Dogonadze of Germany, world champion in 2001, won the women's trampoline gold medal at the Athens Olympic Games Friday evening.

Dogonadze scored 39.60 points, beating Canadian Karen Cockburn to second in 39.20. Chinese Huang Shanshan, at 18 the youngest trampoline participant in Athens, got the bronze medal in 39.00.

Pre-competition favorite Irina Karavaeva of Russia, Olympic champion when trampoline made its debut in Sydney, surprisingly failed to enter the final.

She was supposed to present a wonderful second routine in the qualifying with an expected difficulty of 15.3. However, she missed her landing by stepping on the side pads and fell with her back hitting the trampoline.

Dogonadze, 31, ranked second after the two routines in the qualifying.

Although her difficulty for the final varied to 14.20 in actual performance while expected to be 14.60, the veteran conquered the judges with her perfect execution and height and received a high execution score of 25.40.

Cockburn, current world champion, presented the final routine with the highest difficulty of 14.60, but got lower score for her execution.

The 24-year-old was the bronze medallist in Sydney.

It's a surprise that Chinese young trampolinist picked up a bronze medal since China only has a history of 16 years on this sport.
