World champion Germany stops Nigeria in women's Olympic soccer
font size

Germany, hot favorite for the Olympic title, came from behind to eliminate Nigeria 2-1, the only African team in the women's soccer tournament, at the Athens Olympic Games Friday evening.

After a scoreless first half at the Pankritio Stadium, Mercy Akide found the net first for the African Super Falcons in the 4th minute into the second half.

Seventeen minutes later, Steffi Jones hit home the equalizer for the Germans before Conny Pohlers sealed the match with her 81st goal.

The Super Falcons, who were eliminated from the first round in the 2000 Sydney Games, failed to fly further but still made their record quarter-final appearance in Greece, following their 1-0 win over Japan and 2-1 loss to Sweden in the group phase.

World champion Germany, who has scored a stunning 8-0 win over China and another 2-0 victory over Mexico in the group preliminaries, will play the United States in the semifinal, after the latter beat Japan 2-1 in another quarterfinal.
