    "One Million Lights for Children"

    32nd International Geological Congress opens in Florence

    Sun Wensheng, head of the Chinese delegation and minister of the Ministry of Land and Resources of the People's Republic of China, addresses the opening ceremony of the 32nd International Geological Congress in Florence, Italy Aug. 20, 2004. The congress will be held in Florence of Italy from Aug. 20 to 28, with the participation of more than 7,000 scientists from 120 countries discussing climate changes and the health of the earth.

    Gathering marking birth centenary of Deng Xiaoping held in Beijing

    China's top leaders and representatives from all walks of life gather at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing August 22, 2004 to commemorate the birth centenary of late leader Deng Xiaoping, the chief architect of China's reform and opening-up drive.
