Roundup: Lithuania invincible after narrow victory over Dream Team

Sarunas Jasikevicius scored 12 of Lithuania's last 13 points to lead the European champion Lithuania to a 94-90 upset win over the Dream Team of the United States at the Athens Olympic men's basketball tournament here on Saturday.

With the victory, Lithuania secured a top finish in group B with one game to play and gave the United States its second defeat at Athens.

European runner-up Spain held off world champion Serbia and Montenegro 76-68 to be the other unbeaten team in the tournament and clinched the first place in group A.

Jasikevicius became the hero of Lithuania as he had two three- pointers, one four-point play and two free throws in a row to lift the Europeans to a 93-90 lead with 56 seconds to go.

"I am happy that we beat a great team," said Jasikevicius, who finished with a game-high 28 points.

"I don't remember if I had done something like this in the past, but I think not. I just used some terrific screens by my teammates to hit my shots."

Richard Jefferson of the United States missed a three-pointer 16 seconds from the end before Ramunas Siskauskas iced the victory for Lithuania with one shot from the line with five seconds on the clock.

"We controlled 98% of the game. Then down the stretch we made some turnovers," said Jefferson, who shot 6-for-8 from the field to finish with 20 points for the United States.

Training most of the way in the match, Lithuania overtook the lead at 88-84 with a 8-0 run in the fourth quarter and never looked back.

"We lost the game because of lack of defense," said U.S. head coach Larry Brown. "Our players were looking for great plays instead of easy baskets."

Despite the loss, the United States still made sure a top four finish in group B and a berth in the quarter-finals following Australia's 87-82 loss to Puerto Rico Saturday morning.

Greece beat Angola 88-56 Saturday night to join Lithuania, Puerto Rico and the United States in top eight.

In Saturday's other action, Argentina beat New Zealand 98-94 and Italy trounced China 89-52 in group A.

Spain, Argentina and Italy have cruised into the quarter-finals while New Zealand, Serbia and Montenegro and China will fight for the final ticket to top eight in the last round of preliminaries on Monday.
