Tung Chee Hwa congratulates HK paddlers on their first Olympic silver

The HKSAR Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa extended his congratulations to the Chinese Hong Kong Olympic delegation on winning the first silver medal for Hong Kong in the Athens Olympic Games on Saturday.

Tung said that all the Hong Kong people are proud of their first-ever silver medal, which were won by Chinese Hong Kong paddler Ko Lai-chak and Li Ching in Saturday's table tennis men's doubles final.

"I am delighted to learn of the laudable result of Ko Lai-chak and Li Ching, " said Tung. "Everyone in Hong Kong is proud of their marvelous performance. Their tenacity and strong will to succeed speaks volumes for the Hong Kong spirit.

"The entire community will continue to give full support to our athletes. We wish them every success in the coming events," he added.

He also congratulated the Chinese national team on winning the gold medal.

Patrick Ho, the Secretary for Home Affairs, also cheered for their historic silver medal in table tennis

"The community rejoices at the news. A silver medal is a great achievement and I am proud of the pair, " said Ho.

"Athletes of high performance will become role models of our youth. They will also help promote a sustainable sporting culture in Hong Kong."

"I am confident that our athletes will continue to give their best and bring glory to Hong Kong, " added Ho.
