    China breaks into last eight by beating world champion

    China advanced into the quarter- finals of the men's basketball tournament at the Athens Olympic Games with an amazing 67-66 upset over world champion Serbia & Montenegro.

    Foreign experts in Beijing to get "Green Card"

    American experts are filling out applications for permanent residence at an office of the Beijing Public Security Bureau on Aug 23. The ten foreign experts is the first group that applies for permanent residence in China since China has officially started to implement the "Green Card" system. The foreign experts will obtain their "Green Card" within one month.

    Education conferences open in Beijing

    Former President of the Philippines Lamos addresses the opening ceremony of the "Asia education forum Beijing 2004", "Beijing international education expo 2004", "the 15th international conference for university administrators" and "the 1st Beijing academic forum". The four education-related gatherings are held in the People's Great Hall in Beijing on Aug 23 at the same time.

    Private jail case on trial

    Edward Caraballo, who was on charge of running a private jail, presents the video evidence during the third public inquest at a court in Kabul, capital of Afghanistan, Aug. 23, 2004. Three Americans, Brent Bennett, Jonathan Keith Idema and Edward Caraballo, were found detaining innocent Afghan citizens on July 5, 2004, and then they were arrested by Afghan police and put on trial. The verdict will be issued next Monday

    Fighting, artillery barrage rocks Iraqi shrine in Najaf

    U.S. marines and Shi'ite militiamen fought fierce battles around a shrine in the Iraqi city of Najaf on Monday in some of the heaviest fighting since the 20-day-old rebellion erupted.
